Confederation took place because the us and Canada did not get along very well in the older days and they had many differences so they decided to have confederation also because in order to extend the grand trunk railway the british north American (Canada) clonies had to join togather so that if the british bank gave british north America a loan they could pay back the loan for the railway.
Why indeed? Each member has their own history. For the charter members the idea was to defend against U.S. invasion but that isn't the only reason.
Many were not given a choice. New Brunswick recently made a submission to the Supreme Court of Canada noting that they did not get the vote promised and that most people in NB at the time did not want to join. Which is why they didn't get to vote.
Neither did Alberta, Sask, or Manitoba. In fact they resisted colonisation by Canada and had to be forced into the Confederation at the point of the bayonet and the every present guns of the NWMP.
BC had a choice but again if we look closely it wasn't something they thought the people living in BC should have much say in. For them it was to benefit a few of their elite at the time.
Newfoundland got a vote and were promised lots of social programs. We have since destroyed their livelyhood and they, a rather hardworking bunch, have turned themselves into one of Canada's few "have" provinces. Clearly they would have been richer if they had not joined Canada.
I think the bigger question now is Why stay in Confederation? Outside of Quebec who has benefited greatly and still does more so than any other province, the lost opportunity costs seem to be rising, it appears there are better options for most members of Confederation.
Which is why so many in Ontario and Quebec want to turn Canada into a Federation, then the members could be more easily kept in line even when the federation is not to their benefit.
because canadians wanted to be one.
they wanted to REUNITE!
