In the early 1500s, French explorer Jacques Cartier discovered the Saint-Laurent golfe, looking for a shortcut to Asia. Later on, Samuel de Champlain founded the village of Ville-Marie, which later became Montréal. There men came from France to colonize the new land and the country that was now named New-France, followed by young women, sent by the king to marry the men in the colony and raise families.
