America wanted a canal in South America (more specifically, Panama) to make the trip around North America easier. Back then, they used ships as the primary source of transportation, and it was easier to build a canal in Panama then go ALL the way around South America.

Basically, it's there because Americans wanted the trip to be easier and less extensive.
