Most Christian denominations have quite a foothold in Latin America because Latin American peoples tend to be more devoutly religious. An additional reason the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormons") might have a foothold among the poorer populations in Latin America is because the Church provides education funding, employment training, and welfare assistance to it's members.

This is a complex issue that hopefully more answerers will contribute to, but one of the reasons has to do with disillusionment with the Roman Catholic church among the poor. The structural organization of Mormon congregations helps people in poverty because the Mormon church is very good at helping its members out through collective means.

Another opinion:

The church sent missionaries far and wide, from Canada, the British Isles, Israel, and South America (Chili, Mexico, and others) from the early days of the church (i.e. 1830 - 1900's).

The Book of Mormon is said to be "Another testament of Jesus Christ" together with the Old & New Testaments.

It testifies that Christ visited the American Continent after his death and resurrection.

Hence it is an account of the ancestors of the people of Latin America (the native Indians living there).
