Why do they kill African Wild Dogs?

The locals hunt them, other predators kill them, diseases get to them, and old age gets to somebody.

Due to the need for wild dogs to roam vast areas (an example i Kruger national park, the size of Wales which is only large enough to support about 350 wild dog), they often leave the safety of protected areas in their search for food. This often means they then eat domestic animals which brings them into conflict with humans. There are really only a few protected places large enough to support wild dog long term. While intentional killing does happen it is less of a problem than some of the other things facing wild dog (listed below). Wild dog behaviour makes many of the ways large animals are killed impossible- when farmers try to kill large predators they tend to get a carcass and poison the body, while this is good for killing scavengers and even leopards and lions, wild dogs are very successful hunters so rarely need to scavenge, and so as to not loose their kills to other scavengers tend to eat fast and not return to kills.

Selous game reserve in Tanzania is the only reserve in africa with a wild population greater than 1000. There are only 11 parks in Africa where dogs are listed as common (a word that should be taken with a pinch of salt, Mikumi national park a part of the selous ecosystem has not seen wild dog for 20 years- yet the ecosystem as a whole is listed as common)

Unfortunately there are several other things that are giving their continued survival problems. Due to their social structure if illness enters a wild dog population it tends to be spread rapidly. Due to wild dogs going outside the park they are picking up diseases from domestic dogs in the area. This was the cause for wild dog disappearing from the serengeti ecosystem- when the desease entered the ecosystem there it wiped out all the wild dog in less than 12 months (they have recently been reestablished naturally, after a charity in the area started vaccinating domestic dogs)

African Wild Dogs are endangered so they are being moved onto reserves and are being supported by nation wide wildlife groups. I did a project on them in 4th grade :)
