Currently the Democratic and Republican parties are the two major parties, and the main survivors from a multitude of past political parties. The Democrats are considered to be left of center (liberal) whereas the Republicans are considered to be right of center (conservative). There are no other major parties simply because no other party has gained enough support or organization to be able to succeed at elections. Also, the way the laws are written and the parties are divided out, changes would be necessary for other parties to become larger and more viable.

There are also minor parties such as Libertarian, Independent, and several others.

In speaking about the United States, more than two parties on the national and state levels are needed to properly bring forward different points of view on the policies and laws of those two areas of government. One party cannot do this as it cuts off other political view points. Based on tradition, two, three or multiple parties are fine, the latter usually requiring alliances among parties. On the local level in the US no parties are required at all. Generally speaking, the issues such as where to provide free shopper parking is not a "political" question. Only perhaps in very large cities does party politics make any sense. However, even a city such as New York City can govern itself fine with only independents running for office. Tradition has it however, that large cities require parties for the purpose of an organized scheme of voting. Even this situation a system to avoid political parties could be devised.

If you are going to run for president, you probably should register for a political party because political parties support you more.
