Why does Canada and Alaska together appear larger than the US on a map?

Canada IS larger than the United States but some maps do not accurately show relative surface area. The world is an oblate spheroid, kinda like a slightly squashed beach ball. It is difficult to represent the surface of that 3D object on a 2D paper surface.
One of the more common methods is the Mercator projection. This method is great for navigation, the main use of maps, but it distorts the size and shape of objects, and more so as it approaches the poles which it cannot show. This distortion has northern and southern land forms appearing larger than they really are.
There are many other map projections to better show the size of northern and southern land forms but today we have Goggle Earth and other software that does a very good job of showing relative sizes.
