What is the cultural context of the play The Tempest?

The Tempest by William Shakespeare is about a man called Prospero the rightful Duke of Milan, has been living on a primitive island with his fifteen-year-old daughter, Miranda, for the past 12 years. This was all caused by Propero's brother Antonio claiming that he is the rightful Duke of Milan, usurping the throne and putting Prospero and Miranda out to sea in a leaky boat. On the island Prospero has the aid of Ariel, an airy spirit, and Caliban, who is the son of the former ruler of the island, the witch Syxorax.Prospero, who is a magician, causes a tempest to attack a ship carrying Antonio, Antonio's ally Alonso the King of Naples, and Ferdinand, Alonso's son. In the shipwreck, the various passengers come ashore separately. Ferdinand falls in love with Miranda. Antonio, Alonso and the good old man Gonzalo are led in circles by hallucinations created by Ariel. A couple of drunks called Trinculo and Stephano team up with Caliban. In the end Prospero forgives Alonso and Antonio, Ferdinand and Miranda marry, and Prospero decides to leave magic behind and move on in life.

What are facts about the tempest?

The Tempest is about a man called Prospero, who used to be Duke of Milan but was soon betrayed by his own brother called Antonio whilst Prospero studied magic. He was sent out to sea on a boat with his daughter called Miranda, who has never seen a man except her dad and Caliban (who comes up at a later point). Prospero and Miranda soon find themselves on land that they have never seen before, where Caliban shows them around. 12 years later and Prospero is the ruler, with 2 slaves: Ariel, who is neither a Male nor Female. Then there is Caliban, the "dark creature" mentioned before, who does his best to disobey Prospero. Prospero soon discovers that a ship carrying Antonio, Alonso and Ferdinand (the people who overthrew him) was passing near the island. With help from Ariel, Prospero summons The Tempest, a huge storm, to shipwreck them on the island. The stranded try to search for each other, hindered by Ariel along the way. Then Alonso and Ferdinand reunite, but Ferdinand finds Miranda and decides to marry her (without knowing that his father Alonso was the person who banished Prospero). Eventually the situation ends, and Prospero using his magic makes them all forgive each other, and then sets Ariel free. He gives up his magic and returns back home, with everyone except Caliban. Prospero is then reinstated as Duke of Milan. (Oh, and can people PLEASE stop answering if they are just going to go off topic)

Which statement best expresses how Prospero treats Ariel?

Prospero treats Caliban as a slave. Caliban's speech, found in 1.2.334-47, establishes Caliban's point of view of his treatment by Prospero early on in the play, and the audience needs to keep this in mind throughout the remainder of it. The general complaint by those who have read the play, including most college professors, use the alleged complaint of rape as a justifiable reason for the poor treatment Caliban receives at the hands of all who come into contact with him. But this is taking political correctness too far, in my opinion. Caliban, it must be remembered, is a "natural" creature and does not hold to or even understand a society's ideology about sexual relations. I have argued this in papers and, in effect, set myself up as Caliban's defense attorney. :o) In reading the play from such a defense attorney's point of view, there are other places throughout in which can be found good evidence to argue the case. I shall let you have the pleasure of reading through to find those parts :o)

How does Shakespeare use characterization or symbolism to develop the theme in Act4 Scene1?

In Scene 1, Sebastian and Antonio create a story of a monster to explain why their swords are drawn. Gonzalo connects this with a "buzzing" in his ears which was Ariel trying to wake him up. In Scene 2, Trinculo mistakes Caliban for a fish and Stefano mistakes Trinculo and Caliban together for a four-legged monster. Caliban mistakes Stefano and Trinculo for deities when they are only drunks. Throughout Act 2, the characters mistake the drab reality for a magical illusion. It was The Tempest you were asking about, wasn't it?

Is Miranda caliban from the last book fernald's and Fiona's mother?

It would make sense, seeing as there is a parallel with manatee "incidents" also to stick to alliteration- Fiona, Fernald, Friday. It all adds up, kinda

How is caliban and Ariel relationship with prospero similar?

One school of thought, with which I agree, is that Caliban and Ariel both represent, in part, different aspects of Prospero's identity. It is also important to consider that Shakespeare may have aligned himself with Prospero (see the end of the play where Prospero gives up his book and staff); many think this most likely last play by Shakespeare is Shakespeare's way of saying he is retiring from writing. Keep in mind, too, that it is the good, the bad, and the ugly that make up human identity, and even those parts have their good, bad, and ugly aspects, as well. Shakespeare's works, God bless them and him, ask the audience to think deeply about human actions, thoughts, beliefs, prejudices, motivations, dreams, aspirations, victories, failures, and much more. But Caliban and Ariel play other roles that address the human interests I have just mentioned. Shakespeare, thankfully, never made it easy. :o)
