Why does ponyboy come to believe that Greasers and socs are really very much the same?

Ponyboy believes that other Greasers will end up like Dally because of how they look at life, and how they take it: violent and desperate. Ponyboy also believes this because of Johnny’s death and Dally’s death, they might start hating themselves and blaming themselves for their deaths.

Well let me tell you something and it and it may come as a surprise to you, but things are rough all over." She is stating that they really aren't all that different and Pony starts to think the same thing.

Ponyboy is very smart and can make something of himself unlike other greasers. And he does not fit in with the socs because he does not come from money and that he "acts" like a greaser.
