Why does the Hokage order itachi to kill the entire Uchiha clan?

Itachi massacred his clan because he felt they were holding him back because they always put the clan first. Itachi killed his clan not they were holding him back and just to test his ability too.

∙ 14y agoThe Uchiha clan was planning to go against Konoha and they were trying to use Itachi as their spy.
What they didn't know was Itachi was loyal to Konoha and was a double agent in other terms; he is siding with Konoha as he said:
"I am sorry Otou-sama but my alligence lies with this village first and the clan second. I will not be a tool for you to use as you see fit. I will not...even if I have to kill every last one of you, I will do it, even at the cost of becoming a missing-nin and being hunted down."
He killed Shisui because he later found out that he was working with Orochimaru; who was also planning to destroy Konoha in which makes him kill Shisui.
Itachi left Sasuke to live because he didn't know anything about the attack. Sasuke was very innocent but Itachi didn't want Sasuke to follow the same path the he went through.
Which made then do the most hardest thing that he has ever done in his entire life. Make Sasuke hate him and here's what happened:
"Itachi...why?" called Sasuke "Why did you kill everyone?"
"Foolish little brother, I killed these fools simply to...test my capacity."
"To test your...You killed everyone to test your capacity" cried Sasuke
"Of course" called Itachi coldly with no regret for what he had done.
"Than why don't you just kill me to?" yelled Sasuke
"Because killing you would be pointless, you are to weak. If you wish to kill me, hate me and get stronger."
Sasuke opened his mouth to shout but was stopped when Itachi disappeared and appeared behind him, knocking him unconcious.
Gently lying him on the ground Itachi stared down at his brothers face for a while, "Know that I would always protect you, little brother and that I had to kill them to keep you safe. When you are grown and have gotten stronger you will come for me, for vengence, I know this and when you do come for me I will gladly give you my life so you'd be known as a hero. I wish you many luck little brother and know that no matter what I have always and will always love you. Good-bye...Sasuke" whispered Itachi as he ran off, diappearing into the forest.
Okay! so that is what really happened. You know Itachi was never really evil at all!

∙ 14y agoThe hokage did tell itachi to kill his entire clan.This is because the Hokage was told that the Uchiha clan was after the position of Hokage and because some of the Uchihas wanted the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox so they could make one of the Uchihas Hokage.
Basically he was scared that the Uchiha Clan would take over. (for power)

The 3rd Hokage and the council of Konoha tells hims to, he just accepted it of his own free will instead of being controlled.

Chapter 398-400. Madara tells Sasuke that Itachi was told by the council of Konoha to kill the Uchiha clan because they were planning a coup. The 3rd opposed this but it happened anyway. Itachi told Sasuke that it was all to test his strength, but that was to make him angry and chase him because he wanted to die by Sasuke's hand.
