In the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution it was agreed that part of the northern border between British North America (Canada) and the United States would be at the source of the Mississippi. However, the source was not discovered when the treaty was written in 1789, but it was assumed to be at the Lake of the Woods, even though it was later discovered to be at Lake Itasca, several miles to the southwest. The border, was later defined at the 49th parallel in 1846 until it meets the Lake of the Woods, which explains the Northwest Angle

Where can you jump over the Mississippi river in Minnesota?

There is no location where the Mississippi can be jumped over in one human jump. There are several where you can jump from the US to Canada (on bridges across the river). There are several where you could wade across, not always safely. The narrowest part of the Mississippi is between 20 feet and 30 feet wide where it begins, flowing out of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota.
