Because if you don't vote somebody else will misuse your vote and eventually your vote will cast by followers of one of the candidates. Especially in India the identity checks at the booths are a bogus. At least you will have the satisfaction of casting your to a candidate that you thought was best of the worst!
They are most important in the political process with is based on parties. Elected representatives are first and foremost party representatives in the parliament. They must vote along party lines and stepping out to represent voters can result in censure even expulsion from the party and with that many perks and access to taxpayers money.
This means a voter can vote for someone without knowing or needing to know what a candidates position is on various issues. A voter only needs to know what the parties position is and they can vote knowing the person elected will have to follow the parties orders, with the exception of the occasional "free" vote.
