Responding to numerous reports -- and even hints from the man himself -- that The Jay Leno show was in danger of being canned, NBC has issued a statement saying it is not cancelling the comic's one-hour prime time show.
NBC's statement read:
"Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay's show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance."
James Hibberd, writing on his blog The Live Feed over at The Hollywood Reporter, says "this is less supportive sounding than one might have expected. It's not saying NBC is committed to airing the show, but rather committed to improving its performance. Sources say that means more format tweaks might be coming to Leno Show, which debuted as a talk show/variety show hybrid and has gradually shifted to closer resemble Leno's previous Tonight Show format."
