Thabo Mbeki had dismissed Jacob Zuma from his post as deputy president when news revealed Zuma had been involved in over 700 fraud cases. Early this year Zuma had been voted as the president of the ruling party ANC when it had held its cabinet votes. Zuma was still worried that he may be behind bars when he gets voted for as president of the country next year. However, the judge had recently decided that the application to open a case against Zuma did not follow procedure and thus a case cannot be opened. Zuma is free. Zuma's camp now decided that Mbeki had not served his term well. They also grabbed news that Mbeki might be linked to the arms deal fraud case. Zuma being the president of Mbeki's ANC party asked Mbeki to step down. To avoid public dispute and economic turmoil, Mbeki agreed and handed in his resignation. As of 25 September, Kgalema Motlanthe of Zuma's ANC camp will be the acting president. Deputy president Pumzile from Mbeki's camp also resigned. About 8 other cabinet ministers from Mbeki's camp also resigned.
