Why is Venezuela one of the wealthiest countries in South America?

They are wealthy because of their oil. On the top of it, Chavez no es papo!! He is the leader of a movement of oil producer countries that increase the portion of profits for the producer country, reducing that way the huge margin of big corporations like EXXON, Chevron, ESSO or BP. Chavez problem is that he is using this wealth to give it to the poorest in his country, and with it gain dislike (animadversión) of entrepeneurs (la empresa privada) and the two main parties The Social Democrats and Social Christians, which have been making mess with the petrolleum giving it almost for free to international corporations and keeping just a small fee for Venezuela. Venezuela has a petit burgueois class which is parasitarian and acustomed to a high level of life and waste, engineers from old PEDEVESA that came to the US to get a Master Degree in Oil Producing with a scholarship of $5,000 plus their salaries in dollars overthere in Venezuela. These people who are professional, live in elegant suburbs and drive luxury cars hate Comandante Chavez.

∙ 12y agoThe answer is simple, Venezuela is rich in Natural Resources including oil and gas, has a very low cost of energy, and an ample source of hard currency due to the fact that oil, gas, and petrochemicals are paid in US$.
If the resources were administered in an efficient manner, Venezuela could have been a develop country by now.
