The Hudson Bay Company is likely important to Canada in a variety of ways. First, it was the main competition for the North West Company, which was a group of largely Scottish Immigrants who came to Upper Canada for trade opportunities. As a result, the western parts of Canada were explored and settled, largely due to the trade of fur pelts especially beaver.
Interestingly, one of the original partners of the North West Company, Dr John McLoughlin, left the North West Company and became the Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company. Eventually, McLoughlin went to the Pacific West and founded the US State of Oregon.
If you want more details about John McLoughlin and his role in the Hudson Bay Company, there were a number of books written about him.
