Because NZ is a set of islands, it has an island climate - in other words its climate is dependent upon the climate of the surrounding area - mostly just sea. Australia, on the other hand is an island continent, and is big enough to generate its own isobar highs, many of which drift over to NZ and give us fine weather. Thanx Aus!

New Zealand enjoys an island climate, where the climate is largely controlled by the adjoining sea conditions.

this makes for a weather that changes quickly, but avoids extremes of high an low. Perhaps towards the Goldilocks Zone.
