"Muzak" is the kind of music that is meant as background noise, as opposed to entertainment or art. The kind of throw-away music you hear in supermarkets, elevators, waiting rooms etc, usually performed by uninspired sax players doing well-known tunes, but in a boring way. That is muzak.
