I am also an adopted only child, single, childless, and the same age as Barbara Walters' daughter. I can't speak for her, but I myself have always felt outcast and rejected and unworthy of marriage and family. I have no history to pass on to any child I would have had. I don't want to say that being adopted is a problem, but it is an issue that the adoptee must confront. I wish Barbara would examine adoption, open records, read books like Primal Wound - it is so important to understand what roots do for a person. I hate to use the tree metaphor ("what kind of tree would you be?" Barbara's famous question to Katharine Hepburn), but Barbara's daughter might reluctantly admit that she feels like an artificial tree (tree cut off from her roots). I feel that way. It's painful, and I hate to sound ungrateful - my mother does not like to talk about my birth mother or birth family either - but adoptees need help and need people to stop telling them to be grateful and shut up.
