The Moose is indigenous to Canada and is not found outside of North America so it presents itself as a distinctive icon and symbol of Canada. The Beaver has also been used as a symbol of Canada and was honored on the backside of the Canadian nickel.

The Moose has many endearing qualities that Canadians admire. This animal can endure extreme hardship; is strong yet docile; is so ugly that it seems to have a natural beauty all its own; and it is a noble animal that protects its young against bears and other prey.
