The lead character, a yellow Dog is not-so-accidentally fatally shot by the lead male adult character, after having become rabid. This is one of the very few Disney animal features (Live action) to have a tragic end. The phrase Old Yeller is some folkish variant of Yellow and does not refer to extra-loud barking! There are other films that end with the death of an animal, or a death of an animal is a major juncture in the plot ( like the original version of Toby Tyler where the monkey, Mr.Tubbs dies) but this is rather unusual. Can"t say I like it.
Yes, parts of it are very sad.

A classic movie with a depressing storyline involving animals is Old Yeller. For a more mordern sad movie, check out I am Legend. Any zombie movie that has an animal in it usually ends up poorly for the animal also.
