The New Zealand flatworms are voracious carnivores. Lacking a coelom, these worms absorb the nutrient from their prey by dissolving it in mucus which they then absorb. Ordinary annelid (round) earthworms seem to not have a defence against this behaviour, and they have been introduced accidentally into Europe, no doubt as eggs along with minor traces of soil on agricultural produce.

Since the round worms and flat worms co-exist reasonably successfully in NZ, there is no reason to believe other than this 'happy' condition will eventually prevail in Europe.

Why are deer pests in New Zealand?

'Pests' is a political word. Deer are an introduced species. They do browse forests and trample seedlings. But they are not a threat to the New Zealand habitat in the same way that possums and stoats are. Managementof deer numbers adds value to the New Zealand forest experience. Any article mentioning New Zealand 'pest' usually overlooks the value of deer to our country.
