Echo's chattering allowed Zeus to have a affair behind Hera's back, this caused Hera to curse Echo to repeat only the last words another person had spoken.
Narcissus loved only himself.
Narcissus wasted away while admiring his own reflection in a spring. Echo wasted away of her unrequited love for Narcissus. Much like many modern relationships.
No, the punishment to Narcissus was delivered by the Greek goddess Nemesis (being in love with his own image, unable to look away and eat/drink) and either slowly pined away or killing himself in despair, his blood became the Narcissus flower.
It's not that he was cruel to Echo, he was just so self absorbed that she didn't matter to him. He would have (and did) treat any other woman the same way.
Where echoes come from, and where the flower narcissus does - the flower the Greeks call narcissus is different than the one in the US.
Echo used to distract the Goddess Hera while her husband Zeus cheated on her whit other nymphs. When Hera discovered this, she was furius and punish Echo by taking away her voice, except in foolish repetition of another's shouted words. Echo were therefor only capable of repeating someone else's words. At some point Echo sees a young man in the forest and follows him around. She wants to talk to him but off course can't speak first. Finally the young man (Narcissus) hears her footsteps and asks "who's there?" and Echo repeats "who's there?" - finally Echo shows herself to Narcissus, but the young man turns her down. Heartbroken Echo spends the rest of her life alone in the glens pining away for the love she never knew, crying until all that is left of her is her voice. Thus to this day we can sometimes still hear Echo repeating our voices, or so the tale says.
For one thing Echo was a girl and Narcissus was a boy. Another thing was that Narcissus was very cruel to Echo.
his crime was he hurt echo
