Canada is called a trading nation because of it's large economy. It has one of the largest trade base between a HUGE amount of country'. It is also called a trading nation because most of it's income is relied on trade. Trade is very important in Canada because the amount of jobs it creates and the money it brings in.

Canada trades with other countries because it makes good economic sense to do so. Things Canada sells create jobs in Canada and bring in foreign income that stabilizes the Canadian currency. Things Canada buys from other countries are those things that can't be economically produced in Canada, making products cheaper and more available for Canadian companies and citizens.

For example, Canada sells oil from oil sands to the USA. Canada receives billions in income. Thousands of jobs are created in the oil fields.

Canada doesn't produce any significant amount of citrus fruit. Instead, it imports Oranges and lemons from the USA and Brazil. Without this trade, Canadians would likely suffer scurvy and similar illnesses.
It funds our high standard of living.
