Aqua Marcia was constructed between 144 and 140. The Aqua Marcia was the third aqueduct built by the Roman Water Works. The Aqua Marcia provided the city with clean water while they were expanding. This aqueduct had many different sources not just one river. It had several underground channels that made the waters path. The Aqua Marcia was built on both Sub-channels and Arches, empted its water into a tank like all other aqueducts. Through the buildings of the Aqua Marcia, it had many channels attached to it to move the water around. The Aqua Marcia was the longest aqueduct which spanned 91km and poured in 190,000 m3 per day. 50 miles of this aqueduct was underground, and 7 miles made up the sub terrain and arches. They made most of the aqueduct underground to protect from invaders (they were expanding their territory rapidly).

Paid laborers, slaves, and the legions all had part in building the aqueducts. The Romans built the aqueducts over the course of many centuries and therefore they were commissioned by various men. During the period of the Roman Republic (509 BC-27 BC) the censors were in charge of public works and therefore commissioned the aqueducts. The first aqueduct was commissioned in 312 BC by Appius Claudius Caecus and was named Aqua Claudia, after him. The Anius Vetus was built in 272-269 BC and was commissioned by Manius Curius Dentatus. The Aqua Marcia was built in 1440-140 BC and was commissioned by Quintus Marcius Rex., who also repaired the Anius Vetus. The Auqa Tepula was built in 126 BC and was commissioned C by G. Servilius Caepio and L. Cassius Longinus. Agrippa, who was in charge of public works under Augustus, commissioned the Aqua Julia (33 BC) and the Aqua Virgo (19 BC). He also repaired the Anius Vetus Aqua Marcia.
In the year 226 AD; it was the Aqua Alexandrina, built near Rome.
We call the Roman water system aqueducts. The Romans used two words for it, aquae ductus. If there was a name to the aqueduct, they wold just use aqua followed by the name, such as the Aqua Julia, Aqua Marcia, etc.
The Romans built sewers by digging canals and and reinforcing them and covering them with stone. Water was moved along aqueducts. Water was moved by gravity in conduits of stone, brick or concrete built with a slight gradient. Aqueducts were frequently underground. To pass through valleys or areas with different altitudes, the conduit was on bridgework. High bridgeworks were sometimes built with two or three rows of arches built on top of each other. The city of Rome had 11 aqueducts which brought water from the nearby mountains. Their total length was 475 kilometers. The shortest one was the Aqua Appia, 16,56 km long and the longest one was the Aqua Marcia, 91.42 km.

The biggest network of aqueducts was that which supplied Constantinople, in Greece. It totalled about 250 Km (156 miles). The longest aqueduct which supplied the city of Rome (the Aqua Marcia) was 91.424 km (59 miles) long.
