The main reason Edmonton is the capital of Alberta is that it is geographically centred in the province. Calgary was deemed to far south despite its size (albeit they were very similar), trade (Calgary is known in Canada as "Cow-town" by chance) , and perhaps most importantly railway (The CPR went right through Calgary) advantages. Edmonton was to be somewhat of a forward capital used to create two distinct and important commercial and administrative hubs in Alberta.

Additionally, Buenos Aires was already a significant population center by the time of independence, making it a logical choice for the capital of the newly formed nation. Its political and cultural development further solidified its status as the capital.

Calgary might have been the choice of Albertan's but by the time Canada was setting up the province they had already moved many settlers into the area. These settlers had more political power than the locals and saw Edmonton, the home of the HBC fort with it's connection to British culture and class preferable to Calgary with it's cultural ties to locals.
