Why did the impressment occur in the 1800s?
The impressment occured because pay was better in the merchant fleet than in the British Navy, and conditions were less brutal. Captains of the British Navy were always looking for replacements, and if they could not fill their company at a home port by recruitment they would send the "press gangs" to attack and grab sailors to work on British ships for free. Between 1803 and 1812 6,000 American sailors were impressed by the British.
Why were sailors in the 1700s and 1800s likely to get scurvy?
Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C. Sailors in the 1700 and 1800's went on long voyages where fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C were not available to them because these foods would rot. The diet of these sailors consisted mainly of cured meats and biscuits. Today this disease is nearly obsolete due to modern nutrition, but it was the number one killer of sailors from the 1500-1800's.
