A very long story short, the Dakota were rounded up, placed in a concentration camp, and exiled from Minnesota in 1862-1863. This was the result of a war, which was a result of starvation conditions which were a result of the United States' failure to pay for land with goods and services that it had signed contract to purchase - took the land and developed a wheat monoculture on it anyways though, this eliminating a return to subsistence practices as a possible resolution to starvation.
