Why were the akatsuki formed?

If you watched Naruto Shippuden where Gaara gets caught, they're pretty much trying to get all the demons, and collecting them for power to create a weapon or something (pretty much said). So, the Akatsuki's main goal is to pretty much take over the world.

there is no big purpose of the akatsuki all together each member had/has their own reasons, yet many of them are still not revealed:

pain/Negato: to rule the world with the power of the tailed beasts, although pain/Negato really want peace

Konan: For the love of her long partner, Pain (Negato)

Itachi: after the uchiha massacre with Madara, he stayed in akatsuki to keep an eye on Madara. he watched sasuke from the outside, wanted to capture the nine-tailed-fox inside naruto, thus leaking info on the akatsuki to Konoha as a double agent. he would then battle sasuke and be "killed", giving sasuke the power of mangekyo sharingan. he then tried to kill madara from sasuke

Their main goal/plan is to capture all of the bujji (spelling) or tailed beats and combine them in to the legendary 10 tailed beast so far they have captured most of them except Naruto and like one or two others. .
