While this type of career can be extremely rewarding for the right candidate, being an electronic warfare officer is not for everyone. Here is what you need to know about the qualifications and general job duties of an electronic warfare officer.
In order to become an electronic warfare officer, you will need to acquire training and certification in all of the major aspect of network security and electronic criminal investigations. Most of today’s electronic warfare officers obtained their training as members of the United States Air Force. In addition to basic computer security training, electronic warfare officer are trained in the specifics of our enemies electronic systems, the principles of electronic warfare and various methods of using advanced electronics to assist military operations.
The general job duties of an electronic warfare officers can vary greatly depending on where you are assigned. One day, you may be monitoring the border between open and protected airspace, and your day will be spent at your desk simply ensuring that no borders are breached. The next day, you could be rushing to give pilots as much protection as possible as they enter enemy airspace by employing radar jamming equipment and various methods of ensuring that the mission is completed safely and without detection.
One of the key qualifications to remain an electronic warfare officer is to participate in ongoing training. There are new electronic defense systems and warfare methods being developed every year, and it is the responsibility of an electronic warfare officer to ensure that he has the proper skill set necessary to confront any and all threats. This training is funded by the military, and the Air Force will adjust your schedule to include your studies. As an electronic warfare officer, your ability to handle new and emerging threats will frequently be tested military drills of possible warfare scenarios.
