This environmentally challenging film bore the totally out-of-phase title of The Christmas Tree- though the title could refer to a control panel on the ill-fated bomber which caused the radiation-induced leukemia in the child- for some odd reason neither the mother or Father, and the father witnessed the accident, were affected . The picture- not released in the Yuletide-thankfully- came out in l969 not in the fifties and was a French Production Actors included William Holden as the father and Italian actress Virna Lisi as his wife- it was not quite clear whether she was the child"s mother- Man was well-off engineer before the crisis. the kid died- and this is one of very few films dealilng with the DEATH of a child, apart from mere risks or hazards. Terminal illness in adults was an old plot device ( dark Victory) for example but a child going through death throes- this is not entertainment- and the kid was in no way At Fault. It was a chemical contamination accident. a very sad and morbid film again the Death of a child- while okay in the poetry of Goethe ( Erlking) is a rear downder and bummer as a movie device- and the title with its uppity sound does not help oddly the words Baum- Tree and Bomb- explosive device are etymologically related. as is Boom- noise and the mast of a crane. sick sordid film!
