Had a similar problem with my Caravan... it was the distributor- actually the pick-up in the distributor. Should cost about $60- $80 at an auto-wrecker.

My 01 Grand Cherokee had this problem. Sometimes you turn the key and it starts up just fine. Other times you have to turn the key several attempts before anything happens. Sometimes I have to get it jump-started. The extra power from a second battery will overpower the dead spot and it will start right up.

The only way i found to disarm the alarm was to use the back hatch lock. lock it and unlock it a few times with the key. if this doesnt work try the door locks
