He actually wrote the music for two stage musical productions. The first was Coco (with Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner) which was about the early life of Coco Chanel, starred Katharine Hepburn as Coco and ran on Broadway from December 18 1969 for 329 performances. It cost $900,000 (paid for by Paramount Pictures) and was the most expensive Broadway musical staged at that time. It also toured the US throughout 1971, again starring Hepburn. Previn's second stage musical was The Good Companions, based on the novel by JB Priestley with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was written for London's west end and opened in July 1974, running for 252 performances. It starred Sir John Mills and Judi Dench. Don't forget Previn also wrote the additional songs for the movie of Paint Your Wagon as well as the great Film Musical It's Always Fair Weather.

What is the role that music plays in musical theater?

Without music, musical theatre would be just theatre. Music is the focal point of a story that includes music which is produced in a theatre. This means that not only must the actors be able to act, but to sing. These performances also require an orchestra. Finally, the composers who write the music and lyrics for a musical theatre production are telling a story, and they craft their sequence of musical numbers to help move the story along.
