Anyone Know ? Marcel Barrat -- A Start

I find it unusual that there is no information about the known artist Marcel Barrat. I have seen his paintings list for well over $1000.00 presumably in Europe, and, sell as low as $59.99 last week on Ebay. There has also been an interest request on Ebay for painting owners to auction their Barrat holdings. Yet, there is no record of who this artist was, or, as on Ebay, who is buying his work.

What we do know is that all paintings have to do with French Street Scenes which is why he is probably labled a French artist -- aside from the name. Too, we know that the paintings have consistant characteristics of a stark nature with compelling imagery -- almost winter like scenes.

I am unqualified to offer any further substantive comments on Marcel Barrat. I am not an art collector or follower. I do have one of his paintings and have made this entry in response to the general request to get things started -- Does Anyone Know Anything! I find the absence of knowledge of interest.

In early 1981, I bought my 24 x 20 inch Barrat painting, perhaps named Enterprise Generale, from a Manhattan art dealer near Grand Central Station. I was a walk in customer and the painting caught my eye once inside. It was, as far as I could see, the only Barrat on display. I was intrigued and bought it; carried it on the train home and have had it since.

At the time of sale, I asked the store representative who the artist was. He relayed that Marcel was a new artist with a growing reputation and that those that he respected in the New York art community expected Marcel's works to substantially grow in value. He did not mention whether he , Marcel, was a he, or french, or anything other than being new on the scene and getting attention.

There is little more to tell, other than -- the frame holding the canvas was hard stamped -- Ansco Bilt 24 and Ansco Bilt 00. -- which presumably was the mark of a NY framing supply company. The initials RY are on the back of the canvas as a mark of some kind. The frame itself was made to be simple to compliment the painting.

The words in the street scene the painting presents are most definitely French. If anything else about the painting or artist is French, that information will have to come from another source.

Hope this provides a start.

Hello, my theory is that Marcel Barrat and Robert Scott are one and the same.

I don't believe that these artist (Marcel and Robert) are the same artist. I have two of Marcel and one of Robert Scotts and although they appear very similar I cannot see why if it is same person he would do this. I appreciate both artist.

We just bought a serigraph signed BARRAT but the back of the canvas has written in pencil Ansted, and also Scott #1. 3/20/81. And something else illegible. It is a handmade canvas block.

I am wondering the same thing. The previous comment was over ten year ago, so maybe no one will see this, but I just learned of Marcel Barrat today and am intrigued. The internet isn't telling me much, but when I Google Marcel Barrat, it is showing me images of the Barrat paintings but with the name Jean Benet with two different signature styles. I'm pretty confused by this. The comment directly above mentions a Robert Scott. I'll see what I can find with that name and whether there are three different names on the same pieces of art. If anyone sees this and wonders the same thing or has any info, it would be great to know!
