Ronnie Van Zant- Original Lead Singer- Died 1977 age 29: Plane Crash Steve Gaines- Guitarist -Died 1977 age 28: Plane Crash Cassie Gaines- Background Vocalist- Died 1977 Age 29?: Plane Crash Allen Collins- Guitarist- Died 1991 age 38?- Complications from Pneumonia, spent remaining years in a wheelchair after a tragic car accident that took the life of his girlfriend. Leon Wilkeson- Bassist- Died 2001 age 49: Chronic Liver Failure Hughie Thommasson- Guitarist (1996-2005): Heart Attack Billy Powell- Pianist- Died 2009 age 52 or 53 Ean Evans- Bassist (2001-2009), died 2009 age 48 after a short but difficult cancer struggle

∙ 14y agoAt the time, the band had 10 on-stage members: Ronnie Van Zant, Cassie Gaines, Steve Gaines, Artimus Pyle, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Allen Collins, Leslie Hawkins, Gary Rossington, and Jo Jo Billingsley.
Jo Jo Billingsley was not on the plane. Ronnie Van Zant, Cassie Gaines, and Steve Gaines died, along with their road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and the pilot and co-pilot.
Artimus Pyle, Allen Collins, Leslie Hawkins, Billy Powell, Gary Rossington, and Leon Wilkeson survived, but with very serious injuries.

They released their first new album called Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 followed by The Last Rebel then Twenty, Edge of Forever, and Vicious Cycle. Finally their newest album God and Guns was released in 2009. I will however admit that there have been many line up changes due to deaths of original members and of course members leaving for other reasons, but I can assure you The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band is alive and still going strong and with God and Guns they have reasserted themselves as Gods of Southern Rock!

They put together the band when they were young and had some variances in members through the years. although their is only one original member left they are still making CD's which their latest came out in September 2009
