At the most fundamental level, it isn't. They both generate sound by perturbation of air caused by vibration. Other than that, though, they're quite different. Guitars cause sound by virtue of the vibration of their strings, while a drum's head - a layer of skin or fabric stretched over a frame - vibrates and causes its particular sound. A guitar has considerably more sustain - the term applied to the length of time the sound-producing feature of the instrument vibrates, or, in simpler terms, how long a sound "lasts" - meaning that if you were to pluck a guitar string and strike a drum's head at the same time, you'd continue to hear the guitar's string vibrating far longer than the drum's head. Physically, they're different as well. A drum is composed of a frame - usually circular - with a tightly-stretched sheet of fabric or skin clamped or pinned in place. This sheet - called the "head" - is struck with a solid object like a drumstick or a tipper (the small stick used to play the Celtic bodhrán) to produce a percussive vibration in the head and the air surrounding it. A guitar has a set of tightly-stretched strings - modern strings are generally steel (for electric guitars), bronze (for acoustics) or nylon (for classical acoustics) - that, when plucked or struck with a plexus (also known as a "pick") vibrate and cause sound. In terms of categorization, drums are percussion instruments - defined as instruments whose sounds are elicited via striking some part of the instrument - and guitars are string instruments - defined as instruments whose sounds are elicited by virtue of vibrating strings - though astute students of musical classification will note that while the piano is categorized as a percussion instrument, it does bear some of the characteristics of stringed instruments. Guitars are more commonly found in "electric" versions than are drums, though electronic drum kits do exist. Generally, these kits' sounds are sampled from live drum kits and mapped to certain areas on their striking faces. Historically, the drum is a much more venerable instrument than the guitar as well; the modern guitar evolved from Renaissance instruments like the lute and cittern, while the drum has been played in various shapes and sizes since very nearly the dawn of civilization.

The guitar is wayyyyyyyy harder this is unanimous any body with rythm can just walk up to a drum set and keep a steady beat... where in the other hand you need to know what your doing to pick up a guitar and play a solid note... Just one solid note is hard for the average idiot and then a Chord progression is impossible for them... don't beleve me? go to guitar center and just hit a drum pad... you successfully played a note... now go to the other side pick up a guitar and make one real Note.... than tell me which one is harder

AnswerThat's pretty silly, y'know that? Pick the guitar up, pluck the open E string (your choice)--that's a real Note. A note that is just as musically useless as a single stroke on a drum.

There are reasons drums are harder than guitar:

Four-way coordination is one of the biggest reasons drums are harder than guitar. All your limbs are doing completely different things but all those things have to work together. The guitar equivalent would be playing lead with your right hand while you played rhythm with your left--and that's still not exactly the same because you'd have to play an electric bass with your toes. (One of the few guitar players--well, bass player in this case--who has a task similar to that of a drummer is Geddy Lee; on some of his songs he plays open bass strings on the Bass Guitar with his right hand, and keyboard with his left while he plays bass pedals with his feet.)

The sheer size of a drumset is another reason. I play a six-piece kit: bass drum, snare drum, piccolo snare, two rack toms and a floor tom. That's not a huge kit, but it took a lot of practice to be able to play the floor tom without totally ruining the beat while getting to it. Some players' five-piece kits are set up like Bonham's, who played one rack tom and two floor toms. Getting to that second floor tom REALLY takes some doing.

But the real reason drums are harder than guitar? Physical! Playing drums will wear you out faster than playing any other instrument. You never stop moving.

First off, I would like to say that I am a professional guitarist, and the two that answered the question before me are exemplary of the stereotype that drummers and Guitarists just don't get along, which is common. However, you can not say that one instrument is harder than the other. Different instruments are easier for different people. (No instrument is easy to play).

As a guitarist and drummer, I would like to agree and say that both of the instruments can be equaly hard. It depends on the style of music you are playing. In blues, the guitarist will usually be a lot more skilled than the drummer musicly, but in faster music like rock/metal, the drummer will need to be insanely fit and well coordinated, just as the quitarist. Also to the above comment about drums being alot more physical than guitar, you obviously haven't ever played triplettes or galloped in a metal song before. That can realy tire you just like drumming.

Answer

I used to take guitar (twice actually) and currently take drums. They are two very different instruments. The guitar can be hard and can be funner than drums, and drums can most definitely be hard and can be funner than guitar. Out of my personal experiences, I think guitar is more about notes and memorization and that sort of thing. I think drums is more about counting and beat. I PERSONALLY prefer drums over guitar. But they are both very good instruments. I think drums is a little bit easier to play than drums because guitar has many notes, but drums has many rhythms so I can't have a very good argument on why I think drums is easier.

It really depends on who you are, piano and drums can both be simple and challenging at times, personally, I am neutral in this argument because I play both piano and drums and both are very fun and extremely entertaining, you can improvise and make really fun things up with both instruments. Hope this helped

I think Guitar is alot harder to play.

Piano is definitely harder to learn. Developing the skills are different because you have to read music and learn theory. However guitar is physically harder because you need to develop callouses on your finger and position your fingers in difficult positions to make chords.
