Although scarce, some 20 species are reported to exist in European countries, most of them in nations bordering the Mediterranean and Portugal, but also in southern Russia and Crimea part of Ukraine. Permanent year-round colonies has been found as far north as the UK. In Nordic countries with relatively intense summers, scorpions are never found in the wild. However, some species can deliver a painful sting, all of the European scorpion species are classified as non-lethal to normally healthy individuals, posing no more threat than a wasp.
