The musical premiered on Broadway in 1958. The movie came out in 1961. That used to be the regular modus operandi, first the stage musical opened, then there was a movie version. Not that it's totally new, but it seems that almost every musical on Broadway today is based on a movie. (A current exception is Spring Awakening, which is going to be made into a movie soon.)
