Back in the 80's there was a very popular book called Fit for Life by a couple with the last name Diamond. In it, they had eating plans that were supposedly the optimal food combinations for heath and weight loss.

I haven't heard of anyone promoting this lifestyle in a decade other than them, so I'm not sure if it's scientifically or nutritionally sound. But some of the ideas stuck with me so I try to follow them. The basics I remember from their book were:

BREAKFAST

FRUITS should be first thing you eat after waking. Nothing but fruit, it isn't compatible with other foods. (They even broke it down into 2 types of fruits that they advised against combining). Fruit was eaten first because it wouldn't mix with other foods eaten later in the day in your intestine since it processes quicker than carbs and proteins.

LUNCH

Some point later in the day you were to get your VEGETABLES and your CARBS. (I don't remember the specifics.)

DINNER

If you do eat MEAT, it should be the last thing you eat for the day because it spends the longest time in the stomach. Don't combine meats with carbs. When they are mixed, they cause your system to be sluggish and will make you sleepy.

(I think they advised against eating meat and proposed humans weren't really meant to be omnivores, because mankind's teeth evolved to be flat like cows [vegetarian chewers] and not sharp like cats [to tear meat from its prey]. But they understood not everyone wanted to become a vegetarian.)

Again, I haven't heard of anyone else promoting this eating lifestyle, but some of it has stuck with me for 20 years and I'm still a person who almost never eats fruit unless I can eat it alone. (I occasionally make an exception for chocolate strawberries!)
