The Fluid type should be labeled on the dipstick. Depending on what transmission you have in your Jeep, it could be Mercon ATF for AW-4 Transmission or Dexronll ATF for the 727 and 999 Transmission.

If an auto, check for stamping on the dipstick. They probably were using ATF+4 by then. By certain on the correct fluid as ATF+3 is different than ATF+4. ATF+4 is a synthetic. Dan the tranny man. THE OWNERS MANUAL SAYS DEXTRON III BUT CHRYSLER RECOMMENDS ATF +4 NOW IT IS FROM THE DEALER AT ABOUT $4.00 A QUART YOU CAN USE IT IN THE TRANSFER CASE TOO
ATF+4 or use a synthetic 5w-30 motor oil. The motor oil will have to be changed every 6000 miles though. The ATF+4 can be left in for at least 50,000 miles.
i was acctually an unbeliever when a service advisor from the Chrysler jeep and dodge dealership told me this but what he had told me that every vehicle they service they run ATF (automatic transmission fluid) in the power steering.

It uses ATF+4 only. Do not use Dextron or Mercon.
Your vehicle takes MERCON V ATF in your transmission. Ford has free down-loadable owner manuals on their website.
ATF+3 or the newer ATF+4 ONLY!!!!! Using Dexron/Mercon or ATF will cause problems with the transmission and due to there not having the proper additives for the correct lubrication of the gears and can cause the transmission to 'burn up'.
