We will never know for sure. There would have been more songs and records by John Lennon (and different ones from Yoko Ono), and The Beatles may ultimately have worked together again in some way. (A full reunion would likely have never happened; Lennon himself compared the idea to "going back to high school".) Lennon would have continued to speak out about issues he felt strongly about, and have an influence that way on the public. He would also have continued to use developing audio technology in his music.
Lennon's murder was the first high-profile celebrity stalking, and it set a precedent for later ones. Had his killer failed in his attempt, but been caught, the resulting media attention could have discouraged other such people from trying such actions. His success and relatively light punishment (20 years to life in prison, instead of execution or life without the possibility of parole) arguably encouraged later celebrity stalkers.
