While not a country song- the rather heavy popular song by Procul Harum ( Whiter shade of Pale) could be so interpreted. it takes place on what appears to be a Gambling ship and certain nuances in the lyrics suggest the Titanic disaster- some parts of the song are hard to interpret- one line goes- one of l6 vessel virgins ( apparently new, untried ocean liners) heading for the coast) It is a weird song about a sort of twilight state between life and death- no characters are named , but the setting is shipboard.
its about a woman named mary who always did what other people say, but then she said no to her boss and was really proud, but she got fired and dies 4 years later. I think it is about a river boat named "Proud Mary". John Fogerty is the one who "left a good job in the city" and he "hitched a ride on a river boat queen".
