Yes he did turn it down, as did Vaughn Monroe, Dinah Shore , Perry Como etc.

Crosby thought the song too "juvenile" but it was included on his compilation,

Time Life Treasures Of Christmas Vol 2 released in 1987. Perry Como recorded

it later. Gene Autry (of French ancestry by the way) who reluctantly recorded

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer on 27th June 1949 at the urging of his wife,

Ina May 1911-1980 told his TV Host Jimmy Carter in an interview in the mid

1980's "...............I made a record that I really wasn't sold on to start with.

I didn't think it was going any place.......That was a big surprise to me because

I didn't think it was that good a song". Gene's version sold over 25 million and

continues to sing.
