When he died in 2003, of two stab wounds to the chest, his death was first ruled a suicide; Smith had a history of suffering from depression and had also been an addict, so suicide was considered a logical explanation. But the autopsy showed some discrepancies, and ultimately, the coroner ruled the cause of death as "inconclusive"-- it may have been a suicide, or it may have been murder. Since he died, some of his friends who believe he was murdered have asked law enforcement to re-open and investigate his death, but at this point, no-one has shown an interest in doing so.
