Ellsworth Kelly visited Claude Monet's house and studio at Giverny in August 1952. Kelly had been living in France since late 1948. He arrived at a Giverny in a state of disrepair. It would have to await restoration until the late 1980s. Monet's stepson, Pierre Hoschedé, took Kelly into the studio to show him several late canvases Monet painted after 1900. The day after his visit, Kelly began work on Tableau Vert in response to his experiences at Giverny. Keeping it in this private collection for many years, Kelly gifted the painting to the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009.
