You don't necessarily need a college degree to have a career in radio. There are a lot of popular DJs who didn't go to college. What's important is to find a way to get your foot in the door for your first job at a radio station. Many radio DJs will tell you that the first job of a career in radio is the hardest to nab.
So how do you get it? Some people are lucky; they have close friends or relatives who work in radio and are willing to give them a chance. For the rest of us, there's broadcasting school. At a good broadcasting school, you'll not only learn the ropes for a career in radio, but you'll also get an internship at a radio station. For most people, getting an internship is the best way to get started in a career in radio. It gives you the chance to meet people in the business and learn about how a station operates.
Here's an idea: Volunteer at your local campus radio station doing anything! While you are there and without being disruptive, be inquisitive about the area that you would like specialize in. Ask to be involved. Get to know and learn from the people who are already doing it. The experience you will gain from mentoring with a pro is invaluable to a prospective employer. You could also attend a trade school for broadcasting but be careful about which one you choose. Look for a school that is accredited by a national body and one that can offerfederal grants and loans (like Pell and Stafford). Be wary of schools that offer scholarships or discounts and never trust a school that claims to have "limited enrollment" and saysyou are one of the "select few" who qualifies for entry. There are probably more scams out there than legitimate schools so do your research before committing any money. Good luck! Broadcasting is an excellent business.
A college degree is not required for this field.
A degree in broadcasting would likely make your candidacy for such a job stronger, though there are many radio personalities who got their start in the industry without the benefit of a degree.
To build a radio you will need a receiver and a sender. This would be an antenna and some radio station sending a signal. You will also need an amplifier or speaker to hear the translated signal from the radio station. With all of these and an understanding of physics, you can build a radio, which was something I did freshman year of college.
Not at all. In fact, most radio DJs are not singers and never were. You just need good speaking skills. Most DJs have a degree in communication.
