A violin, a bow, rosin, a case and a cloth to wipe the rosin off of the strings before you put it away.

What is the basis to make the violin produce pleasant sound?

It depends on what sort of 'good sound' you are trying to get at.If you want your violin to have more of a closed rather than open sound, get a mute.If you like loud and 'jig-worthy' get an electric violin. These are very popular in 'string-fests' and busking villages. If you are just looking to not get any wrong notes, you don't need any special equipment. Just practise repeatedly until you get good enough at the song to memorize it.There is one other thing- the kind of strings you have for your violin. There is one of my personal favourites, called the Dominant string. This gives a loud and rich tone and even if you aren't playing too well, the strings cover it up with their great sound.

Where can you get this 1879 violin appraised by a honest violin appraiser?

Good luck finding an honest appraiser! Violin resellers need their cut so they cannot answer exactly. As a student, I ask my experienced teacher about these things. A good quality violin that old is likely to be worth a lot, so get many quotes to form your opinion.

Can you still be on Broadway if you don't have vibrato?

Sure. All you need is talent, luck, and the abilty to take criticism, and allow everything bad about you to roll right off your back. Vibrato is one small part of singing, but there are many others. Remember, you will be singing as a character, while Evita may need vibrato, Ado Annie doesn't.
