A broadcast is the distribution of audio and video content to a dispersed audience via radio, television, or other. Receiving parties may include the general public or a relatively large subset of thereof. Of late, lifecasting has become quite popular where users or content producers stream video about their daily life online using the internet. Justin.tv and UStream are quite popular live streaming video sites. Mod My Life is a new startup which aims to take lifecasting to the next level, with performers being forced to live their lives as the site's viewers see fit.
A standard television broadcast carries more information than a standard radio
broadcast does.
-- FM radio carries, let's say, a stereo audio program, comprising two channels of
15 KHz each, for a total of 30 KHz of audio information. Most FMs also carry a pilot
and a couple of low-injection subcarriers, which don't add all that much, but let's
toss another bunch into the pot and call it a total of 50 KHz to 75 KHz of information
on an FM station.
-- A TV broadcast ... in addition to whatever baseband information content is carried
on the audio channel, also includes 4.2 MHz of information that's used to create the
picture. That alone is more than 50 times the amount of information on the FM carrier.
The difference is suggested in a big way by comparing the amount of spectrum
allocated to each type of service: 200 KHz for a commercial FM channel, versus
6 MHz for a commercial analog TV channel ... a 30 to 1 ratio of spectrum usage.
