by blowing into the mouthpiece creates a vibration the send sound to the valves, then its up to you how high/low the sound is depending on the valves pressed and how your tight your mouth was. then the sound projects throughout the tuba and out the bell.

If you have big lips I would suggest a clarinet, saxophone, tuba, trombone, percussion, or baritone. Those mouth prices are comfortable for people who have beg lips like myself.

I learned to play the clarinet back in the early 1970's when braces were truly medieval torture devices and my mouth was full of them. It was painful playing the clarinet with braces due to the metal pins constantly cutting into my lips. However, the clarinet was unharmed and now- over thirty years later, I'm still playing the same 1963 Noblet N that I played back then.
