One Direction became a band through the British X Factor in 2010. They all auditioned seperately and during the boot camp week they were all decided not to be moved on further, when Simon, Nicole and Louis decided instead of eliminating them from the competition as individual acts to make them a group... thus creating One Direction (the name was thought of by Harry Styles and the band immediately loved it).
